کیارستمی از نگاه بسیاری از منتقدان و فیلمسازان جهان مهم‌ترین و شناخته‌شده‌ترین کارگردان ایرانی بود و بارها نشریات مختلف او را به عنوان یکی از بهترین کارگردانان جهان انتخاب کرده بودند.
